Libyan farm owner arrested for allegedly releasing lion on Egyptian worker

Dubai: Libya’s public prosecutor has ordered the arrest of a farm owner accused of unleashing his pet lion on a worker, after a video of the incident went viral and sparked outrage in both Libya and Egypt.

Authorities confirmed that the man was taken into custody and referred to the public prosecution. He faces multiple charges, including conduct contrary to religious and civil law, endangering human life, terrorising peaceful citizens, and causing psychological and social harm.

The footage shows the lion wrestling with an Egyptian farmhand and attempting to bite him, as the worker struggles to break free before eventually escaping unharmed. Prosecutors described the act as a blatant abuse of power and a serious threat to public safety.

Local reports said the farm owner claimed he was “pulling a prank” on the worker. However, human rights advocates and labour groups strongly condemned the act and called on Libyan authorities to ensure strict accountability.
