Egypt news company fined for broadcasting protest

Last updated:

Cairo: An Egyptian court on Sunday fined a television agency after it broadcast footage of violent anti-government demonstrations.

Judge Sherif Kamel fined Cairo News Company 150,000 Egyptian pounds ($27,000) Sunday for operating unlicensed broadcast equipment.

The complaint came shortly after the news company aired footage of food rioters tearing down portraits of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in April.

Authorities in Egypt are very sensitive about negative portrayals of the president.
