Egypt hosting high-profile Libya talks to end deadlock

Cairo: Egypt is hosting high-profile talks among Libya’s top political and military figures aimed at resolving the war-ravaged country’s political deadlock.

The head of Libya’s UN-brokered unity government, Fayez Sarraj, has met over the past two days with Aqila Saleh, the head of the Libyan parliament. Saleh is also to meet the head of the Cairo-based Arab League officials later on Thursday.

Libya’s powerful General Khalifa Haftar, backed by Saleh’s parliament, is holding separate meetings with both Saleh’s and Sarraj’s deputies.

Libya is bitterly divided among rival factions. Sarraj leads the only internationally recognised government of Libya, based in the capital, Tripoli. Saleh’s parliament — based in the far east of Libya — is the only internationally-recognised assembly in the country.

Saleh’s parliament has not endorsed Sarraj’s government, leading to the stalemate.
