An alert petrol attendant did what he had to do — put out a fire with a fire extinguisher.

But the fire in question was at the tip of a cigarette lit up by a mindless customer while fuelling up!

The CCTV footage shows the customer apparently refusing to stop smoking after being told not to do it, after which a petrol station attendant decided to take matters into his own hands.

The attendant whips out a fire extinguisher and releases a fire retardant on the customer, who is still arguing his case while standing next to a high-octane pump.

A video of the incident, which reportedly took place in Sofia, Bulgaria, on October 3, was uploaded onto LiveLeak, and has since gone viral.

Peter Van den Branden, commenting on the video of the incident, wrote: “That’s the only way to handle those selfish smokers.”

Another commenter said: “It just boggles my mind, like your lung cancer couldn't wait for a few minutes? You just had to light up right then and there?”

Freddy Sumartono, commenting on the video, stated: “I would spray him again until he stopped arguing and start apologising.”

An earlier video taken by a closed-circuit camera at a petrol station in Melbourne shows a man flicking a cigarette lighter while he waits by the fuel pump.

Filmed by the fuel station's CCTV, the man was seen jumping over the passenger door when the fumes ignite. A man filling his car nearby comes to the rescue and extinguishes the fire.
