Dubai: A retired Saudi maths teacher has reportedly gifted her husband a sum of money equivalent to the dowry of a second wife to encourage him to marry a younger woman, local media reported.
The teacher’s decision followed her inability to get pregnant and have children anymore.
However, the teacher’s husband is said to have refused his wife’s offer and instead, he decided to take her on a trip in appreciation of her "sacrifices" over 35 years of marriage.
Polygamous marriages are legally recognised in Saudi Arabia, in accordance with Islamic Sharia law, which allows for a Muslim man to marry up to four wives, provided that he treats them equally and shares all his wealth equally.
