Kuwait: The former wife of the groom has confessed to setting on fire a wedding tent, which left at least 43 people dead on Saturday, according to a report on Tuesday.

The Kuwait Times reported that the 23-year-old woman told police that she wanted to take revenge on her parents-in-law.

She confessed she frequently argued with them and said they wanted to "burn" her heart by making her former husband marry another woman. She also accused her husband of beating her.

She told police she considered many plans to ruin the wedding but finally decided on burning the tent. She said had not intended to kill anyone.

"I only wanted to disturb the party," she said. She explained to offers that on the night of the wedding she used two bottles of petrol on the tent in Jahra before setting it on fire.

The inferno ate up the women's tent within just three minutes and left behind bodies so charred they were unrecognisable, fire chief General Jassem Al Mansouri said.

A total of 43 women and children have died and 90 other people were injured in the blaze, Al Mansouri said.

Health Minister Helal Al Sayer said that 52 people were still in hospital, with at least five people in critical condition.

Thirty-one of the dead were buried on Sunday and Monday. Forensics officials are still trying to establish the identities of the other victims. So far, authorities have been able to identify 13 victims.
