Divulgence of names seen as bid for leniency
London: Nursery paedophile Vanessa George was accused last night of worsening the torture for the parents of her victims.
After months of refusing to name the children she abused, George has now given police a list of up to ten names of children under three.
But parents believe the move is just a cynical ploy to win a shorter sentence when the 39-year-old appears in court again next month. They say she could simply be lying about the children she targeted.
George is believed to have abused around 30 children at the Little Ted's Nursery in Plymouth, taking photographs on her mobile phone and sending them to fellow paedophiles.
The judge at her Bristol Crown Court trial urged her to name names and said that could be taken into account in sentencing. Last night police said the list of names she has given them was being "painstakingly investigated".
Officers will compare the names to previous statements and interviews, as well as photographs that were seized from George's computer, before informing any parents. A source close to the investigation by Devon and Cornwall Police said: "No one in the team is going to take anything she says at face value."
