Dubai: A man in his 50s has been arrested in southern Spain after he set fire to a café when staff refused to add mayonnaise to his sandwich, forcing customers, including children and the elderly, to flee the flames.

The incident took place in the town of Los Palacios y Villafranca in Seville Province and was captured on video, which showed the man pouring gasoline inside the café before igniting it.

In the chaos, his left hand caught fire, and he was seen rushing out while trying to extinguish the flames with his right hand.

Local media reported that the man had twice asked café staff to add mayonnaise, but they explained the establishment had no kitchen and served only pre-made sandwiches.

After his request was denied again, he went to a nearby gas station, bought a liter and a half of gasoline, and returned to douse the café before setting it alight.

The blaze caused damages estimated at €8,000 to €9,000, according to Spanish newspapers.

“He asked one waiter, then another, and finally a third time he was told the same thing, that we didn’t have mayonnaise,” said José Antonio Caballero, owner of Las Postas café.

“He then went to the station across the street, came back with a bottle in his hand, and asked again: ‘Are you sure you don’t have mayonnaise?’ Before the waiter could answer, he set the place on fire.”

No one was injured except the suspect, who suffered burns. Police quickly arrived at the scene, arrested him, and took him to a medical center for treatment. Authorities said he is expected to appear before a judge in the coming days.
