London: When 65-year-old Derek Armiger saw a hooded gunman holding up his local shop, he gave no thought to his own safety.

He stormed into the store only to find the weapon pointed at his own head.

Yet he managed to grab the weapon, which went off shattering the shop window, and wrestle the robber to the floor.

The father of six then sat on the thug, who was begging for mercy, until police arrived with the entire drama captured on CCTV.

The heroism of the bus driver from Frome, Somerset, was revealed after he was given a bravery award last week by Avon and Somerset police. But yesterday he dismissed it as ‘the most natural thing to do'.

He said: "I opened the door and the bloke turned the gun on me and shouted ‘Get out'

"I had no idea what sort of gun it was but I thought if I bide my time I might get a chance. I waited and when he turned to the cashier I grabbed it. I tried to get him in a headlock and as I did so the gun went off and it just missed my head. I managed to get him down before lying across his body. He started squirming under me before complaining that his neck was hurting."

The incident happened in July last year. Although the robber's weapon was only a ball-bearing gun, the bus driver had no idea it was not a real firearm.
