Camerons to scrap Blairs' fitness room

The redesign at 11 Downing Street has gone on for several months and appears to be lasting longer than expected

London: David Cameron's Government has already dumped some of Labour's most cherished policies. Now another of Tony Blair's Whitehall innovations, a mirrored exercise room in Downing Street, is to end up in a skip.

The room where controversial personal trainer Carole Caplin put Blair and his wife Cherie through their paces is a casualty of renovation of the Prime Ministers flat.

Cameron is also having carpet ripped out and expensive black granite worktops installed in the private kitchen, with the work to be done at his expense if it exceeds the annual maintenance allowance of around £28,000 (Dh159,600) for Downing Street.

The catering kitchen at Downing Street is also being renovated.

The redesign at 11 Downing Street where the Prime Minister has his private apartment has gone on for several months and appears to be lasting rather longer than expected.

Not impressed

Now an application has been made to the local council, Westminster, for further alterations to the Grade One- listed building.

Friends have suggested that when the Camerons first saw their new home, Samantha, creative director of an upmarket stationery company, was not impressed by the kitchen.

Their £2.7-million family home in West London, which is soon to be let, is decorated in a minimalist style with chic Scandinavian fittings. The application, lodged two weeks ago, states: 11 Downing Street. Internal alterations comprising new partition wall and relocation of door leaf.
