London:A faltering David Cameron on Saturday said he regretted not taking more time off to recover from the death last year of his six-year-old disabled son Ivan.

His candid comments came in a television interview strikingly similar in tone and style to Gordon Brown's tearful appearance on Piers Morgan's Life Stories.

In response to questions about Brown's grief-stricken demeanour, he welled up when asked when he had last cried.

He apologised for stumbling over his words as he spoke about Ivan, who died almost a year ago after a long battle with epilepsy and cerebral palsy.

"Well, obviously, I've had a year in which I've ... so, yeah, quite recently," he said. "But I think everyone has to decide what they do in terms of answering questions and how much they open up their life."

"And I can quite understand, you know, it's an incredibly difficult thing when you lose a child. And, you know, it's ... well, sorry, anyway ..."
