Three men in China decided to push a car along a road in Hubei Province instead of driving it. Why? They were inebriated after a night of drinking and didn’t want to break the law by driving under the influence.

According to Kwong Wah, the woman posted a video of the incident on social media, one of the men steered the car from outside while the other two pushed from behind. The post quickly went viral, sparking debate among netizens and drawing the attention of local police.

After reviewing CCTV footage, authorities found that the men had pushed the car nearly 500 metres before stopping near a repair shop.

Social media users weighed in with mixed reactions, saying things like: “It’s good not to drink and drive, but is this right?” and “It’s a novel but very dangerous behaviour.”

Did they break the law?

Police clarified that because no one was actually behind the wheel, the act didn’t technically qualify as drunk driving. However, they stressed that it was still illegal.

According to Article 31 of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People’s Republic of China, individuals or organisations are prohibited from occupying roads for non-traffic-related activities without proper authorisation.
