Taiwan enforces strict new anti-smoking law

Last updated:

Taipei: Taiwan has introduced a strict law banning smoking in taxis, airport lounges, karaoke bars and other public places.

As the law went into effect on Sunday, teams of health officials toured theatres, restaurants and other places to monitor enforcement.

The law also bans in-flight sales and any prominent displays of cigarettes at convenience stores and supermarkets where sales are permitted.

Only marked areas are open to smoking and violators will be subject to a fine of up to $300.
