The Election Commission of Pakistan announced on Monday a schedule for election of 52 new members of the Senate, the upper house of the parliament, in March. The 52 of the 100 Senate seats will become vacant on March 11 with retirement of the incumbent members and before that new members will be elected on March three.

Nomination papers are to be submitted on February 12 and 13 and the final list of candidates will be issued on February 25.

Among the senators retiring in March, 21 are from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), eight from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), six from the Awami National Party (ANP), three each from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the rest from other parties.

Some prominent retiring senators are PPP’s Jahangir Badar, PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and PML-N’s Raja Zafarul Haq, Mushahidullah Khan, Pervez Rashid and Syed Zafar Ali Shah.
