Islamabad: Pakistan’s high altitude mountaineer, Sajid Ali Sadpara, on Monday successfully climbed Nanga Parbat, the 9th highest peak (8,126 metres) in the world, also known as the ‘killer-mountain.’

The young mountaineer has achieved this milestone without the help of supplementary oxygen.

This is the 7th peak that he has summitted without artificial oxygen supply.

First summit of the season

Sadpara also confirmed the news on his official Twitter account sharing that “This is the first summit of the season in Pakistan.”

According to Secretary of the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) Karrar Haidri, Sadpara reached the peak in the morning of June 26, at around 7:00 a.m. The ascent to the mountain is the rope-fixing expedition by the leading team.

Besides Sajid Ali Sadpara, two other Pakistani mountaineers Yousuf Ali and Imtiaz Ali Sadpara have also made successful expeditions of Nanga Parbat on the same day.

In May this year, Sajid Sadpara made history as he scaled the world’s highest peak Mount Everest without the support of supplemental oxygen or assistance from sherpas, who are considered elite mountain climbers from Nepal.

In this way, he became the first Pakistani climber to summit the world’s highest peak without the aid of supplemental oxygen, fulfilling the wish of his late father Mohammad Ali Sadpara.

Sajid is the son of the legendary mountaineer of Pakistan Ali Sadpara who laid down his life ‘in the line of duty’ while attempting a winter expedition of K2 in February 2021.

K2 clean-up drive

Last week, at the residence of Nepal Ambassador to Pakistan, Tapas Adhikari who had hosted a reception for him and other mountaineers from Pakistan and Nepal, Sadpara had said that very soon he planned to launch a ‘clean up K2’ campaign. Mountains are like our home and how can we leave our homes untidy and unclean, he said.

Besides, it also aims to ensure a sustainable way to cope with climate change and prevent its impending disaster, he further said.

Aiming for all 14 peaks above 8,000m without oxygen

Sajid also aims to climb all 14 eight-thousanders without the aid of supplemental Oxygen.

The summits he has scaled so far include: In Pakistan: K2 (8,611m), Gasherbrum-I (8,080m), and Gasherbrum-II (8,035m) while in Nepal he has summited Mount Everest (8,848m) and Mount Manaslu (8,163m).

According to the mountaineering company Seventh Summit Treks (SST) based in Kathmandu, all 20 mountaineers of the First Nangaparbat Expedition scaled Nanga Parbat on Monday.

“The entire team of our first Nanga Parbat expedition achieved a remarkable feat today (26th June 2023) by successfully climbing Mount Nanga Parbat, standing tall at 8,126 meters, between 6:55 AM - 9:35 AM (PKT),” it said on the official twitter account.
