Pakistan police: 16 killed in suicide car bomb attack in northwest

Islamabad: Police say 16 people were killed in a suicide car bomb attack on a checkpoint in northwest Pakistan.

Senior police official Riaz Khan says that the majority of those killed Wednesday were officers. The attack occurred in Charsada, an area in Pakistan's northwest region bordering Afghanistan.

Officials said Thursday they had found evidence that indicated the attack may have originated in the northwest's Swat Valley, where the government recently agreed to impose Islamic law in exchange for peace with the Taliban.

A senior intelligence official said the vehicle used in the attack came from Swat.

Bomb disposal expert Hukam Khan estimated about 150 kilograms of explosives were used. He said the blast left an eight-foot-deep crater.
