Karachi: A buffalo which went on the rampage was shot at multiple times in Karachi on Eid Al Adha on Wednesday before it was sacrificed as the owners tried to avoid human and property loss.
The video of the incident went viral on social media even as concerned people demanded stern action against the owners and handlers of the buffalo for unleashing such a grave atrocity before sacrificing it.
The incident happened in a housing society in Scheme-33 area of Karachi. The Repeater rifle and TT pistol were used to tame the wild animal before sacrificing it. Private security guards present in the housing society also resorted to firing at the buffalo.
Senior Superintendent of Police in District East of Karachi took cognisance of the incident. Later, at least four persons were detained by the police for their alleged involvement in the firing incident.
The police will lodge the case in accordance with the “Prevention of cruelty to animals Act-1890” after completing its preliminary investigation into the incident. Several video clips of the incident were widely shared on different platforms of social media.
A provision of “Prevention of cruelty to animals Act says that if any person kills any animal in an unnecessarily cruel manner, he shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which many extend to six months”.
A resident of Karachi University Housing Society, where the incident took place, said the entire episode involving the wild buffalo lasted for around one hour and no one was hurt in the incident.
He said the use of unprofessional butchers on the occasion of Eid Al Adha mostly led to such violent incidents as animal turns wild due to mishandling.
