Authorities condemned the dangerous tradition, urging citizens to celebrate in safer ways
What began as a night of joy and celebration quickly turned to tragedy in Karachi, as ‘reckless’ aerial firing during Pakistan’s Independence Day festivities claimed three lives, including a senior citizen and an eight-year-old girl. More than 60 others were injured across the city, Geo News reported, citing a rescue official.
The young girl was struck by a stray bullet while in Azizabad, while Stephen, a resident of Korangi, also lost his life to the deadly gunfire. At least 64 others suffered gunshot wounds in the citywide incidents, Geo News reported.
Hospitals across Karachi received dozens of patients with gunshot wounds, most victims caught in the chaos of celebratory firing.
Authorities have strongly condemned the dangerous tradition, urging citizens to celebrate in safer ways. “Firing guns into the air is not patriotism – it is a criminal act,” a police spokesperson said. Investigations have been launched, and officials have promised strict action against offenders.
