Myanmar junta frees doctor of pro-democracy leader Suu Kyi before her trial

Yangon: A family member said Myanmar's military rulers have released the personal doctor of jailed opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi who goes on trial Monday for allegedly harbouring an American man who swam secretly across a lake to her house.

Physician Tin Myo Win was taken from his home by police on May 7, a day after American John William Yettaw was arrested at Suu Kyi's lakeside residence where she has been detained for more than 13 of the last 19 years.

Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was charged on Thursday with violating the terms of her house arrest by allegedly sheltering Yettaw, reportedly a Vietnam War era veteran who will also face trial.

A family member of the doctor, who asked not to be identified for fear of reprisals, said Sunday that Tin Myo Win was released by authorities on Saturday.
