Dhaka: Police in Bangladesh say five members of a family were killed when chunks of earth loosened by heavy rains buried their thatched hut.

Police chief Enamul Monwar says rescuers have recovered the bodies of a woman, her three young children and a relative from the mud in the Moulvibazar district. The district is 100 miles (160 kilometers) northeast of Dhaka, the capital.

He said the victims were asleep when the pre-dawn landslide occurred.

Moulvibazar is home to tea gardens surrounded by hills. Many poor workers live in slums close to the hills.
