A woman from West Bengal allegedly pressured her husband to sell his kidney and then used the money to elope with her lover.

The incident occurred in Sankrail, Howrah district, where the woman reportedly convinced her husband to sell his kidney for Rs1 million, claiming it was to secure their 12-year-old daughter’s education and future marriage, PTI reported.

Believing it would improve their family's financial situation, the husband agreed. However, after the surgery, his wife allegedly eloped with both the money and her lover.

The matter came to light after the husband's family filed a complaint with the police. According to the complaint, the woman had been urging her husband for over a year to sell his kidney. He eventually underwent the procedure three months ago.

Following the surgery, the husband was advised to rest at home. However, his wife reportedly disappeared, taking the Rs1 million along with some additional cash. With the help of friends and acquaintances, the family tracked her to Barrackpore, a suburb of Kolkata, where she was living with her lover.

Met lover on Facebook

Reports suggest the woman met her lover on Facebook, and the two developed a relationship before deciding to elope with the money.

After filing the complaint, the husband’s family, including their daughter, visited the house where the woman was staying. However, she refused to come out and speak to them.

Her lover allegedly claimed she planned to file for divorce, accusing her in-laws of abuse.

Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing video footage of the confrontation between the woman's family and her lover. Authorities plan to question both individuals before taking further action.

As per the law, the sale of human organs has been illegal in India since 1994. However, experts believe the practice persists due to a shortage of donors.
