Patna: A man in Bihar was arrested on his first wedding anniversary last Friday and that too on the complaint of his wife who accused him of cheating. The man had allegedly duped the woman into marrying him by introducing himself as a sub-inspector with the elite Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

Police said the accused, identified as Sumakant Tiwari, a resident of Kaimur district in Bihar, met the girl’s father Uma Shankar Choubey, a retired military police sub-inspector from Jharkhand, last year, and presented himself as a CISF sub-inspector posted in Ahmedabad. He even showed him his I-card and photographs in uniform to convince the man. During the course of their conversation, he proposed to marry Choubey’s daughter Puja Kumari, to which Choubey happily agreed.

On June 5 last year, the marriage was solemnised with Puja, a postgraduate student. The bride’s father gave a handsome dowry and some expensive gifts, including a sports bike.

Growing suspicious

However, the story took a new turn shortly after the marriage when the man, Tiwari, did not join duty even three months after his wedding. When his wife Puja wanted to know the reason behind it, the man said he had taken a long leave. But Puja grew suspicious when Tiwari did not report for duty even after the expiry of three months. Upon further queries, Tiwari said that he had been suspended from work.

Puja then tried to find out the truth and began searching for documents related to her husband’s employment. It was during the search that she stumbled upon her husband’s identity card and the uniform of a private security agency. She promptly informed her father over the phone. Her father then contacted the CISF office, which said there was no such person working with them.

Eventually, last Friday, Puja reached the office of the superintendent of police, Dilnawaz Ahmed, and narrated the entire story, following which, police raided the house and arrested Tiwari. Police also recovered a fake CISF identity card, uniform of a CISF personnel as well as those belonging to a private security agency from the house.

Bunch of lies

“We have arrested the man as allegations against him were found to be true during investigation,” Ahmed told the media on Saturday. The accused has also reportedly confessed to his crime, saying that he had resorted to a bunch of lies as he was not receiving any marriage proposal from a decent family despite himself belonging to a well-to-do family.

“This man is a demon. He has destroyed my life, but I will fight with all my might to ensure he passes most of his time in jail,” the woman told the media.
