Where is India placed in terms of human capital? Are our workers skilled enough for the jobs of the future?
India has been working hard in developing human capital. The UPA and NDA governments have in the last decade enhanced the allocation of funds for higher education and research. The IITs, IIScs and lower-tier engineering colleges have upgraded their syllabi to teach advanced areas like AI, automation, machine learning and big data. However, in a big country like India, we have to put in a lot work in improving the employability of our graduates. That task is in progress.
The ABLF has emerged as the finest platform for bringing together business and government leaders from Asia and honouring the best of them.
Is it tougher to be an entrepreneur these days than what it used to be three decades ago?
Today, the challenges are different and are mainly market-oriented. The main challenge is creating differentiation vis-à-vis well-established and financially strong multinational competitors through innovation. The second critical challenge is the extreme competition for talent and fast rising salaries. The third challenge is overcoming the lack of infrastructure in urban areas.
Would you also pinpoint three key leadership traits that future generations can adapt?
Have the courage to stand up for one’s belief and to do the right thing in the face of adversity. Secondly, lead by example, practising the precept and walking the talk to create trust and confidence in the mind of the followers. Finally, demonstrate an enduring value system of honesty, integrity, sacrifice, austerity, trustworthiness, transparency, fairness and excellence.
