Srinagar: An Indian paramilitary soldier has been shot dead in India's portion of Kashmir.

Lt. Col. Biplab Nath said the firing came from the Pakistan side of the ceasefire line between the two countries.

Indian and Pakistani troops have observed a cease-fire in Kashmir since November 2003. However, there have been isolated shooting incidents in the past.

Monday's shooting occurred in Poonch sector, nearly 110 miles (180 kilometres) southwest of Srinagar, the main city in the Indian portion of Kashmir, Nath said.
