Kerala health minister advises elderly and pregnant women to wear masks
Dubai: A top official from India’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has urged people not to panic over the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, according to Indian media reports.
Meanwhile, a joint monitoring group has stated that the situation in China is not unusual given the ongoing flu season.
The group agreed that the current surge in cases in China is caused by the influenza virus, RSV, and HMPV — typical pathogens expected during this time of year, according to a government statement.
Dr. Atul Goel, an official from DGHS, recommended taking general precautions against respiratory infections, NDTV reported.
“Otherwise, there is nothing to be alarmed about in the present situation,” Dr. Goel said.
“There has been news circulating about a Metapneumovirus outbreak in China. Let me be very clear: Metapneumovirus is like any other respiratory virus that causes the common cold. In the very old and the very young, it could cause flu-like symptoms,” Dr. Goel told reporters on Friday.
He added, “we have analysed data from respiratory outbreaks within the country. There is no substantial increase in December 2024 data and no large numbers of cases reported from any of our institutions.”
Dr. Goel emphasised that an increased incidence of respiratory infections is typical during winter, and hospitals are generally prepared with supplies and beds for such outbreaks.
“One thing I would like to convey to the public is to take general precautions that we use against all respiratory infections. If someone has a cough or cold, they should avoid contact with many people to prevent the spread of infection,” he said.
“Use a separate handkerchief or towel for coughing and sneezing, and take regular medicines for colds or fevers if needed. Otherwise, there is no reason for alarm,” he added.
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) under the Union Health Ministry is also closely monitoring respiratory and seasonal influenza cases and remains in contact with international agencies, ANI reported.
What is China saying?
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, stated on Friday that “Respiratory infections tend to peak during the winter season.”
Reassuring citizens and tourists, she added, “I can assure you that the Chinese government cares about the health of Chinese citizens and foreigners coming to China. It is safe to travel in China.”
Kerala Health Minister Veena George advised elderly individuals and pregnant women to wear masks but emphasised there was no need for panic, Indian news agency ANI said.
“We should all pay attention to some precautions given the news of a major outbreak of viral fever and pneumonia in China. However, there are no reports of any viruses that are likely to cause a pandemic or spread rapidly to other areas in China at this time,” Veena George said.
George added that since Malayalis live worldwide and expatriates from many regions, including China, travel to Kerala, “we should be cautious.”
She highlighted that infections, including HMPV, are more likely to affect children and the elderly. She advised these groups, as well as individuals with severe illnesses or those receiving palliative care, to be extra cautious.
“Children should not be sent to school when ill, and those with respiratory symptoms should use masks. There is currently no cause for concern. We are monitoring the situation in China,” the minister added.
