Thiruvananthapuram: Only months after a woman in Kerala chopped off the genitals of a self-styled seer in Thiruvananthapuram, a case of castration has been reported from Malappuram in the north of the state on Thursday.

According to reports, Thursday’s incident happened in Kuttipuram, where the victim and the woman had been staying in a lodge room.

Police have taken the woman into custody and are questioning her. The victim is reportedly a native of Purathur and the woman belongs to Perumbavur.

In another case, on Wednesday a group of women beat up a taxi driver in Kochi, following an altercation regarding booking of the taxi through a travel aggregator site. The taxi driver, identified as Shafeek, 32, a native of Kumbalam in Kochi, was taken to hospital, where his facial injuries were treated.

Onlookers who saw the women thrashing the taxi driver saved him, and he was taken to the General Hospital. Reports said the women were taken to the Marad police station.

The altercation was apparently because a male passenger got into the taxi even as the women were waiting to board it after booking it using their mobile app. According to reports, when the driver said the man had booked the car before the women, the women were infuriated.

In May this year, a 23-year-old woman in the state capital chopped off the seer’s genitals alleging years of sexual abuse at his hands from the time she was a schoolgirl. The grievously injured man had been a regular visitor to the girl’s house. He underwent weeks of medical treatment following the attack.

The victim, Sreehari, 54, or Hari Swami, also known as Gangeshananda Theerthapada Swami, is linked to a spiritual retreat centre in nearby Kollam district.

The woman’s initial submission to police was that she had been devastated by years of abuse, but later she flip-flopped on her statement multiple times.

In the days following the incident, the woman received support from different quarters, including social media, where one person said, ‘A big salute to you, sister’.
