15 hurt as 6.4-magnitude earthquake jolts southern Taiwan
Tremor caused buildings to shake as far as Taipei, damage reported across affected areas
A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit southern Taiwan near Chiayi’s mountainous Dapu township just after midnight on Tuesday, the island’s weather administration reported.
The quake, with a depth of 9.4 km (6 miles), caused buildings to shake as far as the capital, Taipei, and resulted in minor damage across affected areas, local media reported.
TSMC evacuates factories
Chipmaker TSMC, which operates major facilities in central and southern Taiwan, evacuated its staff as a precaution.
The company confirmed that all employees were safe. Buildings in Tainan's science park, where TSMC has factories, were also evacuated.
Casualties and damage
Taiwan’s fire department reported 15 people with minor injuries, including six individuals rescued from a collapsed house in Tainan’s Nanxi District.
A child was among those saved. Additionally, the Zhuwei bridge on a provincial highway sustained damage.
Chiayi county officials reported power outages and minor building damage in some villages but noted no significant casualties. Emergency services in Dapu stated there were no “obvious signs of disaster.”
Damage assessment
Rescuers continue to evaluate the extent of the damage, but no fatalities have been reported so far.
Authorities and emergency teams remain on alert as aftershocks are possible.
