Dubai: If Gulf News readers had a vote in Tuesday’s US presidential election, they would be voting overwhelmingly in favour of Hillary Clinton.

And the result would be a landslide, with the Democratic nominee and former Secretary of State being supported by 72 per cent of online voters, compared with 28 per cent for Donald Trump.

Over the past three months that Gulf News has asked the question ‘Who do you want to win the US presidential race?’ online at GulfNews.com, the Republican nominee and real estate mogul won just 3,577 votes, with 9,064 votes going to the former first lady.

The poll results show Clinton maintaining a clear lead. Online voters are only allowed to vote once, making the gulfnews.com poll all the more relevant and accurate.

And through the four months of campaigning since the Republican and Democratic conventions in the summer, Gulf News voters have been consistent in their support of Clinton.

“GulfNews.com users are unambiguous in their belief that it will be Donald Trump who remains the eternal apprentice and that the next President of the United States will be a woman and former first lady,” said David Westley, gulfnews.com portal manager. “In the GulfNews.com poll, 72 per cent said Hilary Rodham Clinton will be the occupant of the White House come Wednesday morning. Just 28 per cent opted for Donald Trump.”

We asked the question after the first presidential debate, where Trump and Clinton sparred over their suitability to be in the White House, Gulf News readers voted 77 per cent to 23 per cent in favour of Clinton.

That debate saw her accuse the billionaire businessman of not releasing his income tax returned because he never paid any in 20 years.

By the time the second debate came around on October 9, a tape had been released of Trump claiming he groped and fondled women as he chose — a boast he said was locker-room talk.

Gulf News readers consistently supported Clinton after that debate, voting 71 to 29 per cent in favour of a Democratic victory in Tuesday’s election.

And when the third debate came against a nasty backdrop of where a series of women had come forth to accuse Trump of inappropriate sexual contact with them, Gulf News readers voted 76 to 24 per cent in favour of Clinton.

It was during that debate that Trump said he would keep America in suspense over accepting the election result. He later said he would accept the result if he won. Now, it’s up to 219 million eligible voters to decide. And, of course, you can get live up-to-the-minute updates, news and analysis throughout the election count on GulfNews.com
