The Academic City Road has been renamed Zayed Bin Hamdan Road, it was announced on Tuesday.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, gave the order to rename the road after Shaikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan on Tuesday in recognition of his contributions to the UAE.

Shaikh Zayed Bin Hamdan, grandson of Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founding founder, is a war hero who was injured in August 2017 following a helicopter crash while in active duty in Yemen.

He returned to the UAE on Saturday after successful treatment in Germany. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) in London in 2009.

The Zayed Bin Hamdan Road runs parallel to Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road. It is an eight-lane highway that extends 50 km from its intersection with Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road to the Oman Street intersection. Half of the road is already open to traffic while the remaining half will be opened in March.

The road, which has a capacity of 12,000-16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, is considered as one of Dubai’s key strategic roads as it offers access to several major areas such as Dubai Silicon Oasis, Arabian Ranches and the Expo 2020 site.

It features seven main intersections with Ras Al Khor Road, Latifa Bint Hamdan Street, Hassa Street, Al Yalayis Road, Al Qudra Road, Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road and Al Ain Road, in addition to 10 secondary intersections.
