Dubai: In a new initiative announced on Sunday, Dubai Municipality started giving out umbrellas to the public to protect them from the summer heat.

Khalid Mohammed Badri, Director of Corporate Marketing and Relations Department said in a press release that the municipality distributed more than 1,000 umbrellas on the first day of the campaign.

He said places with high density of population were selected for distribution of umbrellas to the public.

A Year of Giving initiative of the civic body which also showcases its responsibility towards the community, Badri said the umbrella distribution programme aims at supporting members of the society, especially those who do not own cars and the nature of their work requires them to walk in the sun during this time of the year.

“The corporate social responsibility concept stems from the efforts of institutions and companies in different sectors of business to balance their profitable and non-profitable activities, which benefit the community, through the adoption of charitable campaigns and voluntary and humanitarian and initiatives,” Badri said.

He said the definition of corporate social responsibility, in addition to humanitarian work in its various forms, includes the development and participation in voluntary programmes and projects, enhancing the value of the humanitarian, charitable and voluntary work of its employees, enhancing the ethical system of work, activating it and ensuring the application of the values of preserving the environment and protecting the resources of the society.

Omar Ahmed Al Marri, head of Public Relations Section at the Municipality said that a team of male and female employees of the municipality on Sunday started the umbrella distribution campaign, which will last several days.

“Our employees distribute the umbrellas to everyone with a smile by telling them: Dubai Municipality is with you to overcome the heat of the sun because you are in ‘Happy Dubai’,” he said.

Al Marri added that in addition to metro stations, the umbrellas have been distributed to the visitors at parks and beaches and the public praised the Dubai Municipality’s initiative.

He said that several other areas frequented by large number of pedestrians have been selected for distribution of umbrellas.

In similar initiatives earlier, the municipality had distributed hand fans to visitors at parks and beaches and gifted cooling caps to street cleaners.
