Role of 20,000 professionals in developing peaceful nuclear energy programme hailed
Abu Dhabi: The UAE today observed the Professional Day of Nuclear and Radiation Sector Workers, an occasion established by the UAE Cabinet in January 2023 to commemorate the issuance of the operating licence for Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant by the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).
The Professional Day highlights the achievements and dedication of the workforce in the UAE’s nuclear and radiation sector, recognising their pivotal role in the development and success of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme. The UAE has emerged as a global model for newcomer countries developing peaceful nuclear energy programs.
Christer Viktorsson, Director-General of FANR, said, “The Professional Day of Nuclear and Radiation Sector Workers is an opportunity to honour the relentless efforts of approximately 20,000 professionals in the UAE’s nuclear and radiation sector. Their dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment ensure the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear and radiation technologies. Their contributions not only drive innovation and progress but also safeguard lives and the environment.”
Viktorsson also highlighted the alignment of this observance with the UAE’s “Year of Community”, adding: “As the UAE celebrates this year as the Year of Community, FANR joins all stakeholders in fulfilling its regulatory responsibilities to protect the public, workers, and the environment.”
The UAE is the first country in the region to build and operate a multi-unit nuclear power plant, with the four-unit Barakah Nuclear Power Plant developed in line with international best safety standards. The UAE’s nuclear energy program has set a global benchmark for newcomer nations looking to establish peaceful nuclear initiatives.
