Dubai: A waitress was jailed for two months for attempted suicide and causing damage to two cars after being fired by a hotel.

The Belarusian woman claimed that she failed to find a new job and suffered severe depression after the five-star hotel where she had been working dismissed her. She said it was her state of confusion that led her to self-harm. She admitted to using a razor to inflict gashes on her neck and wrists and damaging two cars.

The Dubai Misdemeanour Court sentenced the defendant, F.S., 30, to one month in prison for attempted suicide and another month for damaging the two cars. She will be deported following the completion of her jail term.

When she was first arrested by the police in front of the hotel on Shaikh Zayed Road, F.S. claimed that she was depressed and outraged by the hotel's decision to terminate her services.

Guilty plea

She told police that she had injured herself and turned on the two cars parked in front of the hotel in an act of revenge. Prosecutors accused F.S. of attempted suicide and damaging the two cars.

F.S. pleaded guilty and confessed to her charges when she appeared in court. When questioned by prosecutors, she claimed that she had gone to the hotel to meet someone.

"I was very depressed and annoyed after the hotel terminated my contract… I used to work as a waitress in one of the restaurants. When I failed to find a job, I took the razor and decided to kill myself. I slit my wrists and neck and I bled. Then I walked out of the hotel and scratched two cars… then I jumped into my car and drove off. I accidentally hit a concrete wall before I was rushed to hospital where I was treated," F.S. said during questioning.
