Dubai: A child died yesterday evening after a fall from the balcony of an apartment on the eighth floor of a building in Dubai, witnesses said.

The body of the five-year-old girl was found in the parking lot of a building in Tecom that is opposite the Greens Community.

A witness told Gulf News the child fell from a balcony on the west side of the apartment building.

A distraught woman, believed to be the child’s mother, was earlier seen in the building’s car park near the child’s deceased body, the witness told Gulf News.

The area where the body fell had been cordoned off by Dubai Police when Gulf News got to the scene. Police officers and paramedics were at the spot.

Police officers were later seen in the eighth-floor apartment taking photographs and notes.

In 2015, neighbouring emirate Sharjah warned parents could be held responsible for negligence when a child dies due to lack of supervision. Authorities in the emirate have also told those living in apartment buildings non-compliant with the city’s to increase the height of balcony railings to 120 centimetres.
