There are very few undiscovered travel secrets left in the modern world. So you have to look extremely hard to find that unique and exciting destination that you might crave. Have you ever thought of the Philippines?

Even if you have, you probably didn't look past Manila and its surrounding countryside in the north of the country.

But if you venture south to the island of Mindanao there's a treat in store for you.

The Philippines is an archipelago of beautiful islands in the western Pacific. That description alone should conjure up all sorts of idyllic images, and Mindanao does not disappoint. It is the main southern island of the Philippines, and Davao is the largest city on the island.

Beautiful beaches

It sits on the coast to the south inside a large bay known as Davao Gulf with lots of islets sprinkled around its coast. Golden beaches come naturally to the landscape, making the whole area a dream.

Inland from the city are the highest mountains in the country, so there is something for everyone.

As in most places around the world, the locals might take it for granted but they have started to realise its potential as a tourist hub; Davao has award-winning resorts and has been voted the Most Livable City in the Philippines'.

Private corner

The city is a business hub and port for the region but, internationally, the Davao Gulf bay is still a well-kept secret.

It's just an hour's flight from Manila to Davao and you should have no trouble finding a hotel.

Even if you venture here for tranquil seas, you should not forget to spend time exploring the city. Take a ride on a motor tricycle shared with the locals and head for the bazaar. Like most places in Asia, the bazaar is the hub of the city with its local sights and sounds the traders lazing in front of their stores reading a good book during the quiet afternoon or arguing prices with potential customers during busier hours.

When you get tired of diving for pearls in the bay or sunning yourself on a secluded golden beach, you might fancy a relaxing afternoon in the park.

Again, Davao does not disappoint. There is the Butterfly Park, the Crocodile Park and Eden Park. All self-explanatory. There are many parks around the city that draw tourists and showcase the amazing local wildlife.

If you really want to do as the locals do, hop on to a bamboo boat on one of the park lakes. As sublime as that sounds, though, you should realise that it would be at your own risk and is probably not recommended. But the thought is just great!

Here's a final tip to complete your visit. Stay at one of Davao's cheaper city hotels so you can take in the city life. But when you feel the need for the beach you can take a ferry on a day trip to the stunning Pearl Farm Beach Resort and spend the day relaxing — enjoying the resort's facilities for an all-inclusive price, including food, at a flat rate. (I paid Dh100 on my visit).

The resort is an idyllic retreat on a former pearl-cultivation farm, nestled away on the islands of Samal and Malipano.
