Abu Dhabi: The UAE authorities will deploy state-of-the-art digital technology to detect counterfeit products, as well as raise cross-border cooperation to combat fraud. It would also lead to AI-driven enforcement mechanisms and collaboration to address evolving threats in global trade.

These were the highlights of a forum held on consumer rights and expanding the national industries organized by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department.

The meeting came up with recommendations that would lead to a better market system:

  • Tighten administrative sanctions on commercial fraud violators.

  • Establish advanced quality control centers to ensure product authenticity.

  • Expand use of digital solutions for real-time supply chain monitoring.

  • Increase public awareness campaigns to help consumers identify counterfeit goods.

The discussions also centered on key national legislation, particularly Federal Decree-Law No. (42) of 2023 on Combating Commercial Fraud and Federal Law No. (15) of 2020 on Consumer Protection. These serve as legal foundation for promoting sustainable development, ensuring fair market practices, and reinforcing consumer rights.

“Commercial fraud and the trade of counterfeit goods are serious threats that directly harm the national economy, jeopardize consumer health and safety, and infringe on intellectual property rights, whether of individuals or companies,” said a statement.

Various types of commercial fraud:

  • Fraud related to the identity of the product – altering its nature, type, composition, essential characteristics, or source.

  • Fraud in quantity – manipulating weight, volume, size, number, capacity, or standard.

  • Fraud or attempted fraud – selling, displaying, or possessing counterfeit goods with the intent to trade.
