Dubai: Al Wasl, Al Jazira and Dibba were among the main beneficiaries at the end of the second round action of the Arabian Gulf Cup held over the weekend.

Al Wasl stamped their class with a 4-0 away drubbing of Emirates Club in Ras Al Khaimah, while Al Jazira showed signs of revival with a 2-1 win over Al Ain and Dibba stunned fancied Al Wahda 2-1 as the second week witnessed a total of 19 goals scored in the six matches.

Al Wasl had their foreign professionals to rely on once again as Caio Canedo got a brace and Fabio De Lima and Ronaldo Mendes added one each to complete their rout against Emirates in Ras Al Khaimah. That result put the Cheetahs at the top of Group B while also making them the only team to have won both their encounters for maximum six points.

But it was Dibba who grabbed the attention with an impressive win as Alassane Diallo scored twice after Mohammad Al Shehhi had managed to pull one back for the visitors early in the second half.

Going without a win for the past two matches, Al Jazira managed to haul their campaign back on trail. Ahmad Rabea gave Al Jazira the lead in the 44th minute, only to see Brazilian Caio Fernandes cancel out the early cushion five minutes into second period.

But Salem Aleedi got a match-winner in the 68th minute to ensure full points to the defending league champions.

Shabab Al Ahli Dubai spurned an opportunity of being among the early contenders from Group B after they were held to an entertaining 3-3 draw by visiting Sharjah in the final match late on Saturday.

Leading comfortably following goals from Henrique Luvannor (23rd) and Mohammad Marzouq (36th), ten-man Sharjah fought back through a Khalid Al Zari brace on either side of half-time and then led 3-2 following Wellington Soares’s debut goal for his new club two minutes after the hour. But, the home side fought back for a point after Makhete Diop scored from the spot following a foul on Luvannor four minutes before the final whistle.

Sharjah coach Jose Peseiro felt cheated by the late penalty. “We deserved a much better result. For the past five games Sharjah has suffered due to mistakes from referees,” the Portuguese coach charged.

Assistant coach Catalin Raducan, standing in place of the suspended Cosmin Olaroiu, was disappointed with his team after they had dropped their guard midway through the match. “There is so much this team needs to learn. The process is on and the faster we go ahead with this process, the better it will be for us to get favourable results,” Raducan said.

“We started well and led 2-0 by the middle of the first half. We got an added advantage after Sharjah goalkeeper was shown the red card. But, then we switched off and paid the price by committing too many mistakes. Luckily, we were able to save a point in the end,” he added.

The third round of Arabian Gulf Cup matches will be held on November 10-11.
