Dubai: The top five players advanced to the second round in the boy's under-14 category at the 23rd Bank of Sharjah Marbella Resort Open Tennis Championships that got under way in Sharjah earlier this week.

The top two seeds Puneet Varier and Brent Dixon received walkovers from their first round opponents Ankur Tiwari and Madhav Juneja.

Third seed Adham Gabr blanked Hamid Mudher 6-0, 6-0 to set a meeting against Fares Al Janahi, who scored an upset 7-6, 6-3 win over sixth-seeded Omar Omar. Fourth seed Karim Sobh beat Saulius Pakstys 6-3, 7-5 to set up a second round meeting with fifth seed Karim Najia, who secured a 6-1, 6-0 win against Abdullah Khair.

In the boy's under-16, fifth seed Ali Hossam Saif Al Din scored a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 win against Patrick Onla. He will play top seed Dhruv Bahl. Seventh seed Victor Jovic blanked Brohath Amrithraj 6-0, 6-0.

In the girls under-12, second seed Anaya Singh defeated Sophia Tkotnikova 6-4, 6-2 to set up a clash with sixth seed Shreya Sreeram who received a walkover from number four Angel Mazon.
