Prpic annexes first title in nearly two years with fluent win
Dubai: Sweden's Filip Prpic annexed his first title in nearly two years with a fluent 7-6 (5), 6-1 win against James Ward of Great Britain for the Al Wasl Club UAE National Day F2 Futures yesterday.
Khalid Khalil Al Mutawa'a from sponsors Asas Group presented the trophies in the presence of Al Wasl Club's tennis supervisor Omar Abbas and tournament director Zayed Abbas.
Though Prpic was off to a slow start where he trailed Ward, he managed to hold his nerves and claw his way back to win the first set on tie-break 7-5.
The deciding part of that set unfortunately was a debatable line call that went against the Briton, and after that, Ward really never recovered.
"This has been a wonderful year for me and I wanted to finish it off with a win here. I have seen some of the worst umpires here in the 35 weeks I have spent on the circuit this season," Ward moaned.
Briton's lament
While Ward had his laments on the match and its outcome, Prpic was thrilled to pocket his first title in nearly two years. "I have played pretty consistent during my career to pick up one or at least two Futures titles. But since May last year I have struggled, so this win is extra special," stated the 26-year-old Swede.
The second set was more of a formality as Prpic notched two quick breaks in the first and third games to go 3-0 up. But Ward changed his game and started coming to the net, a move which helped him to a break (1-3).
But that was all the Briton could manage as Prpic continued dominating with his steady game from the baseline to win the next three games and the title.
"It is an unbelievable feeling to win. I want to return home and celebrate with my family and friends," Prpic stated.
Result: (Men's singles final) Filip Prpic bt James Ward 7-6 (5), 6-1.
