Kennaugh ousts third seed Uebel

Dubai: Third seed Lars Uebel of Germany went down fighting to Andrew Kennaugh 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the Abu Dhabi ITF Futures tennis tournament being held at the Zayed Sports City.

Kennaugh will now run into eighth seeded Mohammad Al Gareeb of Kuwait in the quarterfinals.

Al Gareeb, who lost to the world's best player Roger Federer during the Dubai Duty Free Men's Open last month, was at his best when he got past Yaoki Ishii of Japan 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4) to reach the quarterfinals.

India's Rohan Boppana had become the first seed to fall on Wednesday when he lost to Philipp Petzschner in three sets. Petzschner continued his good form with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Alexandre Renard of France to enter the quarters.

In the upper half of the draw, India's Prakash Amritraj, also the top seed of the tournament, advanced to a quarterfinal meeting with the seventh seed Jan Masik.

Masik weathered a stiff challenge from Omar Behroozian, the best player in the UAE, to win 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4). In the women's singles, the top four seeds were safely in the last eight stage of the competition.
