Sultan reserves best for last at showjumping event

Wins clear round class after becoming only rider from his group to qualify

Al Ain:  Shaikh Sultan Bin Saqr Al Qasimi turned in a stellar performance, becoming the only rider to avoid being relegated from his group, to win the clear round class of the showjumping competition which concluded in Al Ain on Saturday.

Shaikh Sultan was the only rider in the D category who made the cut on the whole par court. None of the other participants from the group could get the requisite number of points that would entitle them to one of the qualifying spots.

The event, organised by The Palm Sports Resort in coordination with the UAE Equestrian Federation, was held over Friday and Saturday. The tournament, enjoyed the patronage of Shaikh Mohammad Bin Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Finance Department and Chairman of The Palm Sports Resort in Al Ain, witnessed tough competitions through all three rounds held on the first day. The first round involved the D category while competition in the second and third rounds was opened to the A, B and C categories. The competitions reached their finale the following day with riders competing in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds.

Open round winner

In the fifth open round, Hamad Ali Al Kerbi won the first and seventh places riding two different mounts. Salim Ahmad Al Suwaidi was the runner-up. Mohammed Shafi Al Rumaithi took third place with Shaikh Ali Bin Abdullah Al Qasimi coming in fourth position. Ahmad Nabeel Falknaz and Abdullah Salem Juma Al Za'abi finished the competition in the fifth and sixth places respectively.

Salim Ahmad Al Suwaidi bagged the first prize in the sixth round which was devoted to the Top Score Class; Abdullah Humaid Al Muhairi took second place while Omar Gazi Khoory won the third and fourth places after riding two different horses followed by Hamad Ali Kerbi in the fifth place.

Teams from all over UAE

  • The competition drew a field of 100, including some of the finest riders in the UAE.
  • The competition is considered the last event in the calendar of The Palm Sports Resort for this season.
  • The participants represented clubs from Sharjah Equestrian club, Dubai, the Emirates Heritage Club in Abu Dhabi, Ajman as well as Al Ain.
  • The height of the fences was determined as 95 cm for children in the first round and 110 cm and 130 cm for the open rounds.
  • A total of Dh40,000 in prize money was given to the winners in three categories.
