Skipper Al Jasmi picks up two golds for UAE

Dubai: Team skipper Obaid Al Jasmi led from the front to help the UAE grab five medals at the end of the GCC Short Course Swimming Championships, being held in Kuwait.

Leading a small but quality squad of 15 swimmers, Al Jasmi won the gold in the 100-metre freestyle and 100-metre medley to set new national records.

With the Open competition coming to an end, the UAE boys won two golds, two silver and a bronze. Team Captain Obaid Al Jasmi was the most successful swimmer, winning golds in the 100-metre freestyle and medley events en route to two new national marks.

The two silver medals went to Khuwaitar Al Daheri in the 50-metre freestyle and the butterfly events, while the bronze was won by Mubarak Salem in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Meanwhile, the 10 boys participating in the 9-17 years age group have also won a few medals in the junior section.

After two days of competition, the juniors have won a gold, two silver and a bronze medal.

Nine-year-old Mohammad Eissa Darwish romped home with his first national team gold in the 100-metre individual medley. Darwish had earlier won silver in the 50-metre freestyle on the opening day.

And 11-year-old Mohammad Eissa Salem, swimming in the 12-year group, has won a silver and a bronze medal establishing two national records in the process.

Every UAE swimmer has swum a personal best time maintaining the hundred per cent records set at the Summer GCC Long Course Championships last year.
