Guangzhou: Omar Juma Al Sulfa handed a historic track and field bronze medal to the UAE when he took third place in the 200m at the Aoti Stadium on the fifth day of the track and field of the 16th Asian Games here yesterday.

Al Sulfa, who had qualified to the finals on Wednesday with the second best time of 20.63secs – also his personal best time and a new UAE national record - paced his race well and was strong with a final kick, but that was not enough to get past Qatar’s Femi Seun Ogunode and Kenji Fujimitsu of Japan who won the gold and silver respectively.

“November 25 is one day which will be remembered for all time in the history of sports in the UAE,” Ahmad Al Kamali, President, UAE Athletics Association (UAE AA) told Gulf News.

This is the first bronze for the UAE at these Asian Games following three earlier silver medals won this week by Shaikh Juma Bin Dalmouk Al Maktoum (shooting double trap); Shaikha Latifa Al Maktoum’s equestrian individual jumping and the second place claimed by the equestrian team.
