The aim of dressage is for the horse and the athlete to reach perfect harmony with one-another while navigating the course. Horse and rider will alternate both free and mandatory movements, such as walk, trot, gallop and halt.

It is one of the few events where men and women compete against each other.

Free movement presents special choreographies for each horse and are followed by music. Seven judges assess each performance, giving points from 1 to 10. After being totalled-up, this score generates a percentage, and the rider or team with the highest rate is the winner.
