The 15th edition of the New Indian Model School (NIMS) basketball tournament will begin from tomorrow.

This tournament, organised by the NIMS, Sharjah, is hailed as the oldest inter -school basketball tournament in UAE.

Elaborating on this popular tournament, G. Vijayakumar, the organising secretary told Gulf News that "this tournament has grown in its popularity every year. This year we have 16 teams competing in the event. The matches will be played in the school's floodlit basketball court."

Following a meeting of the physical education teachers the sixteen team were divided into four pools.

"Seeding was given to last year's semi finalists, New Indian Model School, Dubai, Indian High School, Dubai and New Indian Model School, Sharjah. The tournament will be conducted on league and knock out basis.

"Top two teams from each pool will qualify for the quarter finals which will be played on knock out basis," revealed Vijayakumar.

The Model School, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah Indian School, NIMS, Dubai and Our Own English High /school, (B team) Dubai are placed in Pool A.

The hosts NIMS, Sharjah are grouped in Pool B with Modern High School, Dubai, The Millennium School, Dubai and The Gulf Asian School, Sharjah.

Indian High School, Dubai, Emirates National School, Sharjah, Delhi Private School, Sharjah and NIMS, Sharjah (B team) are in Pool C.

The Pool D comprises Our Own English High School, Dubai, Our Own English High School, Sharjah, Our Own International School, Sharjah and the B team from Indian High School, Dubai.

P.C. Thomas, a senior Indian basketball coach and International referee has been invited from India to officiate in this tournament.

"The inaugural match will be held tomorrow from 3:30 p.m. between Sharjah Indian School and Our Own English High School (B team)," said Vijayakumar, who is also one of the most experienced basketball coaches in the UAE.
