Los Angeles: Detroit Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch will miss the rest of the new NFL season after tearing a knee ligament in a sack celebration gone awry, the team said on Monday.

Tulloch tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Sunday after sacking Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, landing wrong after a celebratory leap.

“You’re passionate about the game and you want to get up and celebrate and people do it many times,” Tulloch said after the Lions’ victory. “It’s unfortunate that it happened to me.”

Tulloch had 20 tackles and two sacks in three games this season.

Lions coach Jim Caldwell said he doesn’t plan on trying to quash post-play celebrations by his players.

“This is an emotional game,” Caldwell said. “We want enthusiasm.”
