Dubai: The Chinese junior synchronised swimming team took gold in the Free Combination on Saturday, the third and final day of the first International Water Polo and Synchronised Swimming Championships, at the Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Sports Complex in Dubai.
Finishing just 1.912 points ahead of Greek club Vouliagmeni, the Chinese topped the medals table with four gold and one silver.
The Greeks clinched three gold and four silver while Egypt took two silver and five bronze.
China dominated the overall tally despite the fact they didn’t compete in the Solo Technical or Solo Free events.
Elsewhere, Greek club Olympiakos beat Serbia’s Partizan Raiffeisen 13-2 in the final of the Water Polo.
Raiffeisen, despite being one of the strongest sides in Europe, with seven European Champions Leagues titles to their name, couldn’t hold back Olympiakos who boast four members of the Greek national team in their ranks — three of whom competed at the 2012 Olympics.
The first Water Polo and Synchronised Swimming Championships were staged in the lead up to the ninth Asian Swimming Championships, which will be held in Dubai from November 15 to 25.
This will be the first time in the history of the Asian Championships and Dubai that all four disciplines — swimming (50m pool), synchronised swimming, water polo and diving — will be held in one event in one venue.
Over 700 athletes from 23 countries will be competing.
