Is Gout Gout the next Usain Bolt? Comparisons with the Jamaican icon often surface when a young sprinter lights up the track — but few live up to the hype.

Gout, 17, might be different. The tall Australian has been electric in junior athletics, with a raw speed and relaxed style reminiscent of Bolt. And he’s backing it up with results.

In his European debut at the Ostrava Golden Spike on Tuesday, Gout ran a stunning 20.02s in the 200m — the 11th fastest time of the season. It smashed his personal best and Australian record, and marked his first professional race outside home soil.

He first caught global attention last August with a 20.60s run at the Under-20 World Championships in Lima. It earned him silver — and a contract with Adidas.

Born in Ipswich, Queensland, to South Sudanese immigrants, Gout was just 16 when he ran 20.04s to win the 200m at the national high school championships, breaking a 56-year-old record set by 1968 Olympic silver medallist Peter Norman.

His 100m potential surfaced in April when he twice ran sub-10s at the Australian Athletics Championships in Perth — though wind assistance nullified both times.

The real test awaits at the Tokyo World Championships in September, where Gout will face world champion Noah Lyles and Olympic medallist Letsile Tebogo. That showdown should be electric.
