Abu Dhabi: The first-ever ladies' team from the UAE will take part at an Asian level ice hockey championship when the Abu Dhabi Ice Sports Club (ADISC) send their ladies' team to the Hong Kong Open from May 9-14.

This was disclosed yesterday at a press conference attended by Hamad Obaid Al Shiriyani, Executive Director of ADISC, Ali Ahmad Al Hosani, Manager of Communication and Marketing in the club, and Seanna Marie Murphy, the team's Canadian coach.

"This participation would has been an unrealistic dream some years ago but for the continuous support of our leaders and their belief in the sector of youth and sport. We are proud to announce that the Abu Dhabi Storms will send their ladies' team to Hong Kong to take part in the Open event there with the best teams from Asia," Al Shiriyani said.

"The team was established in September last year and the interest shown by the local girls was tremendous. We have 41 local players and seven foreigners in the team and we are providing them with their first ever taste of international exposure to gain experience and to hone their raw capabilities.

"The formation of the team was in implementation of the ADISC policy to introduce and spread ice sports in the UAE in general and in Abu Dhabi in particular and also within the policy and vision of the UAE Women Sports Committee which encourages the local ladies to practise different sports.

The squad: Fatima Al Qubaisi, Mona Al Daheri, Latifa Mohammad Al Suwaidi, Reem Al Shakeeli, Kawthar Faisal Mohammad, Ebtisam Rashid Mohammad, Kholood Ali Mohsin, Jawaher Suad Al Marzoogi, Dana Al Housani, Alya Mohammad Mahmoud, Layla Al Tanneer, Anna Lee, Caroline Lauland, Cathia Bhuto, Jenniefer Line and Annomilia Nassi.
