Abu Dhabi: If Hafsa Al Ulama is granted her wish, the UAE could soon have its first-ever women's football league.

As Chairwoman of the Women's Football Committee at the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Al Ulama has long fought for the rights of Emirati women to practice sports in general and football in particular.

She plans to spread the game by organising the first league between school girls at the start of the new educational year in September, she told Gulf News.

Al Ulama was speaking on the eve of the West Asian Football Federation Women's Championship where the UAE national women's team made history when they played Palestine in the opening match of the tournament at the Armed Forces Football Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The UAE are proud hosts of the event that also features teams from Jordan, Bahrain, Iran and Kuwait.
