UAE clubs through to GCC Champions League last-eight

Al Nasr and Al Shabab will bid to win their respective groups on April 15

Dubai: Al Nasr and Al Shabab qualified for the quarter-finals of the GCC Champions League late on Tuesday.

Ivan Jovanovic’s Al Nasr drew 2-2 away to Qatar’s Al Khor, where Habib Fardan’s brace was cancelled out by a late double from Ebrahim Awwal.

The Blue Wave stay top of Group C on seven points, one clear of second-placed Al Busaiteen of Bahrain. They next play Al Busaiteen at home on April 15 in the last group stage match to decide who wins the group.

Elsewhere, Marcos Paqueta’s Al Shabab won 1-0 at home to Saudi Arabia’s Al Shoalah thanks to a late winner from Edgar Bruno.

Al Shabab are now second in Group B on four points, three short of leaders Al Muharraq of Bahrain. They next play Al Muharraq away on April 15.

This is Al Shabab’s sixth GCC Champions League appearance in 21 editions of the competition. They have previously won the tournament twice in 1992 and 2011. Meanwhile, Al Nasr have only made one previous appearance, back in 1987.
